The capex-cash compression

Meta reported third quarter net income of 9.86 billion dollars on Wednesday. A year earlier the figure was 2.71 billion.

Free cash flow for the same three months was negative 2.12 billion dollars. A year earlier it was positive 10.63 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg said the investments are paying off and the core business is strong. The shares rose after the release.

The key observation is that profit more than tripled and cash flow crossed below zero in the same three months.

The two figures do not contradict each other. They come from two statements that follow different rules.

Net income weighs revenue against the costs assigned to the period. Free cash flow weighs it against the money that actually left.

The company put 34.91 billion dollars into property, equipment and finance leases during the quarter. Almost none of that reached the profit line.

That one quarter of spending equals 54 percent of the revenue booked in the same three months. It buys capacity meant to earn in later periods rather than in this one.

A data center is not an expense in the year it goes up. The cost sits on the balance sheet and is charged against earnings a slice at a time over the years that follow.

Cash leaves on the day the bill is paid. Nothing but timing separates the two numbers.

Revenue reached 64.6 billion dollars, up 26 percent and above the 63.4 billion analysts expected. Fourth quarter guidance runs from 73 to 76 billion, and the midpoint of that range also sits above the forecast.

The company raised the floor of its capital spending range for the year to 135 billion dollars, from 130 billion. The ceiling stayed at 145 billion.

It also set out a plan to issue a new class of non-voting shares in January.

Elon's Next Millionaires Start October 24?

Tesla made 5,000+ of its own employees millionaires. SpaceX minted 4,400 in a single day.

Now Elon's gearing up for his biggest venture yet. It's powered by an obscure AI firm he's relied on since 2012. Former Wall Street CEO Dylan Jovine calls it "Elon's 100X AI Stock."

His research says it could mint a whole new class of millionaires starting October 24. This time, you could be one of them.

This is a capex-cash compression.

Capacity is paid for now and earns later. The distance between those two dates has to be funded by someone.

For years the cash the business produced covered that distance. This quarter it did not.

A non-voting share class raises no money by itself. It creates something the company can sell later without handing over any of the votes.

The quarter closed with 82.45 billion dollars in cash and marketable securities on the balance sheet. That is the reserve the build is drawing against.

These figures cannot say whether the spending is too large. A quarter of negative cash flow in the middle of a build is what a build looks like.

The 264 percent profit gain carries a problem of its own. It is measured against a year-ago quarter that was itself unusually low.

Zuckerberg's reading is that the investments are paying off. The cash statement records the bill rather than the return.

That IPO minted 4,400 millionaires overnight.

If this is 180 times bigger…

Just imagine how many more Americans will become millionaires.

Will you be one of them?

What the build returns

Data center construction spending. The Census Bureau breaks this out of its monthly construction figures, which puts a public number on the physical build before any company reports. A climbing figure would widen the commitment beyond a single buyer. A slowdown would mark the build decelerating before an earnings call says so. (Source: Census Bureau)

Private fixed investment in information processing equipment and software. This line in the national accounts covers every American business, not one firm's guidance. A rise would place the spending across the economy. A flat number would keep it inside a handful of balance sheets. (Source: Bureau of Economic Analysis)

Electricity sales to commercial and industrial customers. The monthly power figures count what finished capacity actually draws, which is the first measure of whether anything built is running. Rising sales would show the capacity in use. Flat sales alongside rising construction would show it waiting. (Source: Energy Information Administration)

A building is bought in one quarter and written off across many. Every quarter in between, the two statements will disagree.
